Research Methodology and Analytical Approach

An approach that considers both the complexity of regional developments and their wider international implications.

Our approach

Context, relationships and multiple perspectives

Caucasus Research Center recognizes that the study of geopolitics, international relations, and regional security requires an approach that considers both the complexity of regional developments and their wider international implications.

Political and security events rarely occur in isolation. They are shaped by historical circumstances, institutional relationships, domestic political considerations, geographical factors, and the strategic interests of different actors. A useful analytical approach must therefore consider the connections between individual developments and the broader environment in which they occur.

The Center's research orientation emphasizes contextual analysis, the examination of relevant political and strategic relationships, and the consideration of multiple perspectives when assessing regional developments.

Analytical methods

Five complementary perspectives

Contextual Analysis

Contextual analysis involves examining developments within their relevant political, historical, geographical, and international settings. This approach helps clarify why particular events occur, how they relate to broader trends, and what factors may influence their consequences.

In the Caucasus, contextual analysis is especially relevant because the region's political and security environment is shaped by a combination of local, regional, and international considerations.

Geopolitical Assessment

Geopolitical assessment focuses on the relationship between geographical position, political interests, strategic priorities, and international influence. It can help explain how regional relationships develop and why particular locations, transport routes, or political relationships acquire strategic importance.

Such assessment also considers how changes in the wider international environment may influence regional actors and their policy choices.

International Relations Analysis

International relations analysis examines diplomatic relationships, foreign policy priorities, international cooperation, and the interactions between different political actors.

This perspective can help explain the development of bilateral and multilateral relationships and identify the wider implications of diplomatic initiatives, policy changes, and international agreements.

Security Analysis

Security analysis considers the political and strategic factors that influence regional stability and the management of security challenges. It may involve examining threat perceptions, conflict dynamics, security policies, and the relationship between diplomacy and stability.

Such analysis requires attention to the perspectives of relevant actors and the broader political conditions in which security developments occur.

Comparative and Multidimensional Perspectives

Where relevant, regional developments can be examined through comparison with other cases or broader international trends. Comparative perspectives can help identify similarities, differences, and contextual factors that influence political and security outcomes.

A multidimensional approach also recognizes that geopolitical developments may involve political, economic, diplomatic, and security considerations simultaneously.

The Center's research approach is intended to support clear, careful, and context-sensitive analysis. Specific methods and sources should be identified in individual publications according to the subject and scope of each study.
