Who we are

Understanding the Caucasus within the wider international system

  • Research Center — LatviaCoordination Center — Turkey
  • International audienceResearchers, policymakers and institutions

The Caucasus Research Center seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the political, diplomatic, and security processes shaping the region, as well as the relationships between the Caucasus and the broader international system.

Located at the intersection of Europe, Eurasia, and the wider regions surrounding the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus occupies an important position in contemporary international affairs. Its geographical location, political diversity, strategic connections, and complex regional relationships make it a significant area for the study of international relations and geopolitical change. Developments in the Caucasus are influenced not only by local political processes but also by the foreign policies, security interests, and strategic priorities of regional and international actors.

Caucasus Research Center approaches these issues through a research-oriented perspective that emphasizes the importance of regional context, international political developments, and the interaction between security, diplomacy, and strategic interests. The Center's principal focus is the examination of the factors influencing the regional balance, the evolution of international relationships, and the broader implications of political and security developments for the Caucasus.

The Center has its Research Center in Latvia and its Coordination Center in Turkey. This institutional arrangement provides a geographical framework connecting European and regional perspectives and reflects the importance of understanding the Caucasus in relation to its neighboring regions and the wider international environment.

The Center is oriented toward an international audience, including researchers, policymakers, academic institutions, think tanks, international organizations, and other stakeholders interested in the political and strategic affairs of the region.

Our approach

Understanding the region through research

The contemporary Caucasus cannot be understood through a single political, geographical, or security perspective. Regional developments are connected to broader international processes, changing diplomatic relationships, economic and strategic interests, and the policies of neighboring and international powers.

Caucasus Research Center considers these connections central to the study of the region. Its research orientation emphasizes examining developments from multiple perspectives, distinguishing immediate political events from longer-term structural trends, and considering the potential regional and international implications of emerging challenges.
